Beachbody Ultimate Reset – Day 8

June 17, 2013 in Blog Roll, Nutrition

First day of Phase 2 – the “Release” phase. Here we release all of the gunk that’s built up in our guts for Lord knows how many years.

Here’s how today went. Pardon my appearance, it’s Sunday and I had absolutely nothing to do or nowhere to go for the first day in weeks. So, no work on the hair and not a stitch of makeup to the face. Even stayed in the pj’s until after lunch which was downright AWESOME. Honestly can’t remember the last time I did that. As for the expression on my face in the link, well, I’ve pretty much given up on YouTube at this point. Sheesh.

Not much in the way of food pictures to share today. Breakfast was a big plate of fruit similar to the one I had last week. BUT, we’ve added a new supplement called “Detox”. We take this three times a day, 30 minutes before every meal along with the Mineralize and Optimize supplements. The Detox supplement is made up of:

Chia seed
Flax seed powder
Camu-Camu
Cat’s Claw bark
Pau de Arco
Chanca Peidra
Whole Turmeric
Slippery Elm
Ginger Root
Peppermint
Citrus Bioflavonoids
Garlic
Quite a list. This blend of ingredients is formulated to get your “pooper” working and rid the colon of all the waste and toxins that have built up over the years. Here is what it looks like all mixed up with water. Pretty much looks like a cup of dirt doesn’t it? Surprisingly, it doesn’t taste bad at all. One of the greatest things about being a part of the Beachbody community, from day one, has been the positive atmosphere. Everyone, from the day I signed onto the message boards, to the day I joined as a Coach, and beyond, has always been supportive and positive. It never mattered whether you were a P90X person, or all about Insanity, or whatever; if you were moving your body, and helping/inspiring others, and doing it safely, it was a good thing.

Beachbody Ultimate Reset – Day 7

June 17, 2013 in Blog Roll, Nutrition

Day 7…last day of Phase 1. I cannot get over how fast this week has flown! Here’s my video of how today went, with a cameo appearance by my lovable dog, Oscar:

Seriously YouTube. I look like a zombie from the Walking Dead. Enough already.

Mmmm….more oatmeal this morning. This time with half an apple, some ground flax and cinnamon. Comfort food makes me happy.

No pictures of lunch today. Had another micro green salad and I think you’ve probably seen enough of those this week On the side of the salad we had another bowl of the zucchini and cashew soup. Happy yet again after that meal!
Dinner was ho hum. Baked tempeh with brown rice and steamed broccoli. Still undecided on whether or not I liked the tempeh. It wasn’t bad and it wasn’t great. I did enjoy the flavour which came from Bragg Liquid Aminos, Maple Syrup, Apple Cider Vinegar, Garlic and Himalayan Salt. The texture threw me off though. A little on the dry side and quite chewy. The rice and the broccoli…nothing really to say about that. I’m sure we’ve all been there, done that and there’s no need for a description. All in all, a filling and satisfying dinner.

So tomorrow officially starts Phase 2. No more animal products so that eliminates my yogurt fixes and my hard …read more

Beachbody Ultimate Reset – Day 6

June 16, 2013 in Blog Roll, Nutrition

HOT DIGGITY…..I SLEPT THROUGH THE NIGHT LAST NIGHT!! Totally worthy of a Happy Dance!!

Okay, now that I’ve done my little jig, let me tell you how today went….

So thanks to some phantom menace messing with my alarm clock this morning I overslept and couldn’t make the planned breakfast so I went to my beloved Shakeology and filled the pit with Tropical Strawberry goodness. No need to post the picture today, but if you’d like to have a peek, check out the blog for Day 4 because I had the same thing that day too.

As with every morning, I need a snack to bridge the gap to lunch and keep myself from eating my office supplies. This did the trick. Love my strawberries! And cantaloupe too!

ANOTHER salad for lunch. But I’m good with this. I’m a salad junkie most days anyway. The added avocado today made this one extra fabulous.
Okay, now this picture does NOT do our dinner justice. This was phenomenal. I LOVE root vegetables so I could have eaten the entire tray of these babies. And the soup….THE SOUP!! Cashew and zucchini soup. Now, I tripled …read moreBrought to you by: Jill Taylor Fitness

Beachbody Ultimate Reset – Day 5

June 15, 2013 in Blog Roll, Nutrition

Hey folks….here’s a little taste of how Day 5 went (I don’t even know what to say about the facial expression I have going on here…YouTube strikes again!):

So here is my big fruit plate and yogurt that I had for breakfast. Good stuff, but not as filling and long lasting as my beloved Shakeology.
By the time lunch rolled around I got pretty darn hungry and dug in without taking a picture. So you don’t get to see the big bowl of quinoa salad that I devoured, or the bowl of fresh veggies and hummus. Take my word for it…it was very good and VERY filling. Feel free to imagine it in your own head.
This was dinner. Super awesome veggie stir-fry on WAY overcooked brown rice. EEWW is all I had to say about that. Not quite sure the picture is sideways here but I suppose it doesn’t really matter. A stir-fry looks like a stir-fry from any angle. Axed the Miso soup from tonight’s menu. Just couldn’t do it again this week.
And, last but not least, my FAVOURITE part of today. God bless the inventor of the Jacuzzi and Epsom salts. Body is happy for the first time in 3 days. Ahhhhh……

Beachbody Ultimate Reset – Day 4

June 14, 2013 in Blog Roll, Nutrition

Day 4 gets 1 &1/2 thumbs down.

So I totally got lazy and went with Vegan Tropical Strawberry Shakeology this morning. I was too damn tired from tossing and turning in pain all night to make whatever it was I was supposed to have. This was pure awesomeness. As yummy as the breakfasts have been so far, I love my morning Shakeology. Tooty fruity deliciousness. Lip smacking GOOD!!

Lunch was a repeat of yesterday so here’s what we had for dinner:

This was A LOT of food! Super yummy veggie stir-fry on a bed of Quinoa and a side tomato/cucumber salad. Was totally full after this. But, two hours later as I type this post, I’m hungry again. I haven’t taken in enough calories today and I’m thinking a before bed snack is in order. Probably totally against the Ultimate Reset rules but I need to do whatever it takes to not look sickly from weight loss. Will keep the snack to the permitted snack list and hopefully that will hold me over until morning.

Bruce had a better day today but he stayed home from work and was able to rest his achy body. He’s still fighting a bad headache but part of me wonders how much of his complaining is more of a cry for sympathy than anything else. He can be that way sometimes. It’s what men do when they feel like poop. :-) He’s down 5lbs.

Food Labels Matter: Why You Want To Check Labels

June 14, 2013 in Blog Roll, Nutrition

By Ryan Gillespie

In an emergency run to the supermarket the other day, I grabbed some essential items to keep my house stocked with food for the week.  I didn’t have time to do my regular shopping routine and so I settled for what I could get at the nearby grocery.  I only grabbed the essentials to get me through, so it has been kind of a “barebones” week.  One of the things that I grabbed were liquid eggs whites, much like the liquid egg whites that I eat every day.  I assumed that they were okay and didn’t bother looking at the label.  Yesterday, I offered to make Jen some eggs by adding the liquid eggs to an actual egg and frying it… she said “hell no”.  So today, based on her reaction, I looked at the label…

The Front Of The Box: Food Labels Matter

A comparison of my usual egg whites vs the ones I bought at the supermarket…

Trader Joe’s Liquid Egg Whites: The TJ’s brand is advertised as 100% egg whites, cage free, and has a USDA inspection label on the front of the box.

Second Nature Pure Egg Whites: The Second Nature brand is showing 99% egg whites, labeled as “real egg product”, and is endorsed by the American Heart Association.

Both are fat and cholesterol free.

So… examining these products at face value, they are the same thing.  They are both egg whites and although one boasts being “cage-free” (not sure that really gets you much in terms of quality), you are buying the same product essentially.  Heck, the Second Nature brand is even endorsed by the American Heart Association.

So is it possible that you don’t have to go to some fancy store (Trader Joe’s) and you can just trust items …read more

Body Beast Journey Day 64: Build Chest & Tris

June 14, 2013 in Blog Roll, Fitness

By Ryan Gillespie

Aaaaand Fail.  So I guess if you are planning to do 50 minutes of heavy, non-stop lifting… you should not be failing in the first set of reps.  I attacked this workout at the onset and paid miserably for the rest of the workout.  Every chest press set and even the fly moves were either sloppy or total failure, as my muscles were completely spent.  I forgot that you have to pace yourself in these longer workouts.  Humbled, I walked away from this one with a challenge for next time.  Survive.  Hitting the new cutting diet also impacted my ability to lift heavy as well.

I did this workout at the gym at work, as I didn’t have time to do it this morning or this evening.  I am now in the BEAST phase of Body Beast and the workouts are mixed between Build and Bulk phases, while the calories drop so I can cut a bit of this fat that I have acquired while trying to build muscle.  I went up to 70 lbs on the last set of reps for Dumbbell Chest Press.  This was awesome to put up, but it burned me out early for sure.  Everything else suffered and I really struggled with the workout.  I remember from last round though that cutting back on calories and carbs, really makes the lifts harder too.  Again, why I will never understand a low carb diet combined with lifting.

Body Beast Journey – Workout

Here are the numbers:

1. Single Set
Dumbbell Chest Press – 15, 12, 8, & 8 reps = 45, 55, 70, 50 lbs per arm (up!)

2. Super Set
Incline Dumbbell Flys – 15, 12, & 8 reps = 30, 35, 40 lbs per arm
Incline Dumbbell Press – 15, 12, 8, & 8 reps = 40, 45, …read more
